“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
The power of God’s Word, the power of the sound of God’s voice, and the physical manifestation of it, shaped all known and unknown creation. The tone, intention, and resonance of His voice is still vibrating throughout the expanse of it. God made a proclamation to Israel that we all benefit from by way of example. In Jeremiah 31:35-36, He said that His Word is as fixed, established, and as faithful as the lights He placed in the sky and the order He set in motion in the beginning. He is the initiator and sustainer of it all. God’s Word is eternal. It’s powerful! The evidence for which is all around us. The evidence is us!
The Bible tells us that God’s Word isn’t the written scriptures alone, but boldly declares that it’s a person. The apostle John bears witness to this in chapter 1 verse 14 of his gospel about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,”. Jesus was the living, breathing, active, walking around, revelation of God’s message sent into the world. And just as we observe God’s spoken and assigned Word in action every day of our existence, obeying God’s command, Jesus did the same. God’s Word never fails or falls to the ground fruitless, but always accomplishes that which it (He) was sent to do. Jesus, Himself, confirmed this with His last utterance on the cross: “It is finished.” He changed the world with His unyielding obedience to the Father. Jesus proved to us His trustworthiness and the soundness of scripture by fulfilling what was spoken of Him in it, immersing Himself (God), fully into life as a human being. Powerful.
Jesus is the power of God to us for every situation. My dad says that the Bible is like a Swiss Army knife. It has something for everything. I love that. But what are some biblical descriptors? I’m glad you asked. If you didn’t, well…you’re getting them anyway😉:
A Sword- Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6:17
Fire and a Hammer- Jeremiah 23:29
A Lamp and a Light- Psalms 119:105; Proverbs 6:23
Spirit and Life- John 6:63
Seed- Luke 8:11
Bread and Food- Hebrews 5:12-14
Milk- 1 Peter 2:2
Sweeter than Honey- Psalm 19:10
A Mirror- James 1:22-25
God gave us a wealth of wisdom and resource in His Word!! I mentioned Psalm 19. When you get a moment, read it. It starts off like this: “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known.” What do you suppose the heavens and skies are saying day and night? I have an idea. I think they are repeating what God said in the beginning, found in Genesis 1:14-18. Over and over. Day after day. Night after night. Faithfully, they are declaring God’s glory to whoever will listen. If these, which have no audible voice but testify and have no ears to hear but obey God’s every command, then how much more should we testify of and obey the One who is the Living Word. With all the evidence the Bible, creation and the Son of God provide, what is our response? Again, we find our answers in scripture. Fear (awe) the LORD, love Him, trust Him, obey Him, spend time alone with Him…all things Jesus exemplified for us. If we do these things, we will experience and live out the power of God’s Word in our lives. The sound of His voice will reverberate through us just as it does in creation, fulfilling our purpose by giving witness to His glory.
